"Fashion is wearable art. Every person on the planet wears some form of clothing. Clothing also tells an extremely large amount of information about the culture the garment comes from. As a designer living through the ongoing evolution of fashion, it is my responsibility to represent the culture I have come from. By creating garments that have strong narratives and points of view designers demonstrate the sophistication of much of today’s culture. Fashion is sometimes created for beauty, sometimes as a critique of the world, and sometimes both. To me, fashion is the art of the modern culture."

David's collection: New York City is a place that I have been obsessed with for years. One night while in the East Village, I looked at the sky and was mesmerized by the color scheme created by the city and the clouds. It was an overcast night and the light the city produced was projecting onto the clouds, creating a purple-grey cloud on a navy sky. While I was in awe of the colors, I noticed the clouds moving slowly past the buildings.

This made me think of the contrast between nature and structure. I began doing small sketches of garments that go along the theme of nature vs. structure. When I heard about Fusion I knew immediately that I wanted to participate, so I went back to my sketchbook and started rethinking my concepts. While doing a 3-D wire assignment I realized I needed to represent the buildings and the clouds in an understandable way without being too literal.

Metal panels became my answer. These panels will be the main representation of buildings in the collection, along with other structural elements in the construction. Leather with beading woven in geometric patterns became a way to show the combination of something natural (leather) and something structural (beads). Tulle and chiffon will help achieve a cloudlike look. The idea I want to project is the thought of structural elements invading natural elements.

What about Fusion are you most excited about? Fusion is the largest industry opportunity that I have ever come across. Not only would I be able to show a collection to industry people, but I would also be able to meet people with the same interests as I have. Working closely with the other designers from Parsons and FIT will allow even more opportunities and friendships. Hanging out with the beautiful models doesn't hurt either.
